I'm thinking of an engine transplant.
Toyota 4AGE seems popular, but a little expensive. I've noticed Mazda engines are fairly cheap, anyone got any input re dimensions, output,
tuneability etc?

Not bad little engines and should fit a locost pretty well.
ST have re-engineered the Pheonix to use an MX5 as a single-donor, and I know some-one else fitting one to an old striker so should be pretty
straightforward.
For tuning, google "eunos tuning" - there's a fair few around.

The mx5 engine is a good old cast iron block so it's a bit weighty. Therer are various sizes - the early 1.6 gave good power and the later 1.8 is
up at 140hp but the later 1.6 (>1996 I think) is only 90hp. Early 1.6's (pre 1992 ish) had a design weakness of the front crank pulley key
which could account for the engine being in the scrappers!
Loads of tuning stuff around, but what works is forced induction & you can buy bolt on turbos to take the old 1.6 up to 270hp - (check
"flying miata" on google)
Nice gearbox but bizzarre rear gearbox mounting (OK it doesn't have one)
Cheers
