Smooth power transfer to diff
femster87 - 13/5/17 at 09:20 AM

Struggling to get power transfer. To diff without a knock. As anyone fitted the rubber donut to help reduce the knock.

Knowing from what engine/box might help.

Zetec, to Mazda gearbox and sierra diff

With those components, in good condition, you should be suffering undue problems.

Are you sure there's not a clearance issue, somewhere? Or play in the propshaft UJ?

femster87 - 13/5/17 at 10:23 AM

I looked at the diff mounting yesterday and it looks secured. The prop bolts are all tight and seem to be in good nick. I'll have to set up a camera under the car and go for a drive

Backlash in diff?

femster87 - 13/5/17 at 11:10 AM

That was my initial thought, hence the rubber donut to take out the slack

You need to fix the issue not try to mask it IMHO
A rubber donut won't take out the slack it'll just soften the clunk maybe.
Fetch it round here (Wombwell) and we can take a look if you want? I'm currently playing with diffs

Nick, should I call round tomorrow and we can go for a drive, you'll see what I mean. Diff is only 3 years old.

Sam_68 - 13/5/17 at 11:56 AM

Is it more of a clunk, or a knock (don't you just love trying to diagnose noises on the internet)?

If the former (duller, because it's inside a casting filled with thick gear oil and mounted on resilient bushes), diff backlash would certainly be prime suspect. If it's harsher, spider on the UJ or the gearbox or diff knocking against the chassis due to inadequate clearance would be favourites.

Has it always done it, or is it a noise that's developed recently?

It is more of a clunk. just put car on the road yesterday after some winter work. Not on the driveline though . New owner and not driven since purchase.

Brake caliper taking up lost motion in the slider ?

madteg - 13/5/17 at 02:46 PM

I have always had a knock. Reconditioned Diff.propshaft.driveshafts and gearbox .
I have put it down to backlash in diff and also everything is solid mounted.
Just live with it now as its pnly noticeable when in traffic. Please let me know if you sort it out

femster87 - 14/5/17 at 06:08 PM

For continuity, the diff has a lot of backlash in it. Will wip it out and get it adjusted. Thanks Nick for the help
