Advice on fitting the type9 to rover v8
Mr Perfect - 12/1/05 at 11:31 PM

Hi all

looking at buying a rover v8 but would like some advice as to fitting it to the type 9 ,(that i already have) or should i look at replacing it for the rover box, (which one?)

Would like to keep the type 9 as i am told you can get all kind of goodies for them.

Regards

Nik

Don't put the Rover v8 on to the type 9 gearbox.

Firstly, you'll need a gearkit in the type 9 or it will break in 5 mins, and new the gearkit will set you back £750 minimum unless you are very lucky and find a good, really cheap s/h one, but when you do, give me some of the rocking horse sh1t that the seller also has.

Secondly, even with a gearkit, the type 9 will not take the torque of a modified Rover v8, it's just not big enough (shaft centres etc)

Best to go for either the Rover 'box (ex police sherpa is a cheapish source apparently) or a Cosworth T5 (Borg Warner) 'box and TVR bellhousing. Not too cheap but not too bad and will not (should not!!) break.

If you go for the T5 option, you can use an RV8 auto bellhousing with an adapter plate. I managed to find one of these on ebay, but presumably you could buy the adapter plate from one of the V8 specialists or it wouldnt (shouldnt) be too hard fabricate one yourself. You can see my T5/auto bellhousing/adapter plate in my avatar!

The T5 has a better reputation than the Rover LT77 box from the SD1, Sherpa etc. Both types pop up on ebay fairly regularly.

There is some useful info about the Rover boxes here.

Thank's for the advice, will look out on ebay for the T5 box.
