Hi been given a land rover series 1 3.9 engine that is manual, want to use it as a trike engine, but wife would need an auto can i convert or does any one know could i use a different gearbox? sort of mix and match?
A series 1 Land Rover never came with a v8 or an auto box!
Do you mean a discovery?
That aside look for a ZF HP44 Box out of a series 1 discovery, these also came in BMW's etc so you can mix and match to make a RWD auto box to
fit by sourcing the tail shaft.

So sorry, you are right. It is a Discovery, really do not know what made me say Land Rover. Will have a look for what you have suggested. Thank you for
the prompt reply really appreciated.
Flembo.
You should be able to find all the parts you need, look for Rover SD1 V8 autobox, flex plate, torque converter etc, no electronics to worry about on
those.
Dont forget to remove the crank spigot bearing, autos don’t use them and it can foul the converter nose.
That's an old 3 speed Borg Warner 65 slush box.
No electronics on the ZFHP44, 4speed with lock up in top which work so well they even stuck them into some SD1 race cars and is still very available.
Thank you all for the replies,I will be scouring ebay and the likes

I used to race land rovers, most classic range rovers and series v8 discoveries had this box so still plentiful.
They are great, very strong can take a 4.6 engine no bother just keep them cool
You will not change gear as fast, even today go to a 4x4 race and you will see lots in action, you cannot change gear as fast and the spacing is
pretty good as well.
