help and advice please
i am in the middle of replacing the sump pan on my 711m 1600 x flow engine to witch is a front bowl sump
pan that needs repairing as it has got some small hole/s in it .. the replacement is a rear bowl sump pan .. the problem i am having is i am unable
to remove the oil pick up pipe to replace with the one for rear bowl sump ( must say the engine is still in the car) how is the best way to remove

once the bolt holding it to the bottom end is taken off, it pulls out, might need twisting a bit

i did that when i converted to front bowl with no problems .. to cut a long story short i got hold of a bad engine from a so called
friend on which i have to spend a bit of money to put right.. the engine is a 1600 and had a 1300 sump fitted that was no good.. i put on a front bowl
sump and changed the pick up pipe with no problem .. the sump has now developed some hole's that now needs repair/s so fitting a new rear bowl
sump and need to put the rear bowl sump pick up oil pipe ... but the problem is the front bowl pipe does not have a bolt to hold it in as the filter
was spring loaded and sat on the bottom of the sump to hold it (i think) but i am unable to get it out and i only pushed it in when fitted it .. for
some reason i am unable to get it to move or twist to the point that i have crushed the pipe and broken off the filter so it now must be replaced but

Pliers and pull harder. Maybe some penetration fluid.
Else engine out, drained and apply heat.
can you post a pic of were the pick up enters the block ?

Ok, but next to were the oil pickup goes into the block, theres a 5/16 bolt holding a bracket its the only bolt any were near the pick up tube
is it there ?
Oil pick up tubes on a crossflow are push fit, and almost loose, and with out the 5/16 bolt, will fall into the sump all on its own
If all the fittings have been removed and it still won’t come out it’s possible to tap a thread in the stuck section, fit a bolt and use a slide hammer to remove it . As has already been said it should pull out easily

yes i had to remove rear bowl sump pipe with that fitting and did not require it as the front bowl pipe did not have that fitting .. as
the front bowl sump now needs some repairs for some small holes i am looking at having it shortened at the same time .. i have got hold of a rear
bowl sump for a 1600 to fit for the time been so i can still use car thorough summer so need to put the rear bowl sump pick up pipe back in .. thanks

Well, it doesnt look as though i can help with this crossflow problem, and ive rebuilt many xflows,
The subject of not using a 1300 sump on a 1600 engine is false, as it can be used, but slightly modified
I did this by mounting the sump on bare engine fully tightened, and using a very large socket, ie 36mm, and a extension bar, down each barrel,
a few hefty clouts, denting the sump, and the sump is modified, the crankshaft (its actually the conrod bolts) will not touch the sump
Now on to rear of forward bowl sumps
Rearward bowls in an escort cortina etc, are fine, as the cars are a lot higher, but in a 7, more specifically my old 7, a rear bowl sump caused no
end of trouble, as it was just the right (or not) to interfere with road bumps etc, and suffered many heavy scrapes, until i changed it
A forward bowled sump was much better, as nearer to the front of the car, and would clear humps as the front wheels did

just for info i have now got the pipe out ... i took a little bit of what rusty nuts had said but i do not own a slid hammer .. the
way i did this was to cut the pipe to 2inch below the block face and then i taped the pipe and used a spacer over the pick up pipe and then use the
bolt and nut to draw the pipe out tighting the nut on the spacer ... it has been a little tricky as the engine is still in the car so not a lot of
space and worked well. thanks to you both for replying to my post. i am not very good at explaning things on here as i am not very good at spelling
or typing (lol) next job is to put sump back on .. the one i kook off will be repaired shortend and put back on thanks to you both regards ian
Thanks for the feedback, but between all of us Xflow users, we couldnt work out what was going on !
On your modified sump, i would "advise" that the sump does not go any lower than the bottom of the gearbox, in fact mine was a flat bottom
sump, and was about 20mm higher than the lowerst point on the gear box

i have now got the job done rear bowl sump fitted no problems with oil pick up pipe and working well .. i have
checked the clearance and have 3.5 inch ground clearance so have lost a little .. the front bowl sump once cleaned will be off to be repaired and put
back on .. thanks to rusty nuts for that little input i did cut the offending pipe down and taped it but did not have a slide hammer so used a spacer
over the pipe with a bolt and nut then tightend the nut to spacer to draw out the pipe to witch worked .. sorry if i am not very clear but it's
the best i can say as i am not to good with words ... thanks regards ian
