Scan/CAD of zetec and/or early MX5 backplate
cliftyhanger - 4/1/26 at 04:18 PM

Anybody know of a source for a scan or CAD file of the back of a zetec engine and/or early MX5 NA/NB box

I am thinking of attempting an early MX5 box onto a zetec (the later N7 box is way too fat to go between my chassis rails)

I have a handy local who can do the CAD work to merge the 2, and even 3d print me a prototype....

TIA

Here's an stl model of a zetec blacktop complete engine at 1:4 scale, I don't know how accurate the model is, but looks fine by eye.
Probably needs scaling in onshape/freecad and checking against a few known measurements to be sure.

Thank you
That is a slight curveball!
I will get my useful 24 year old to see what he can do with that.

I was hoping a Zetec file would be easy to find, plenty of adaptor plates for other gearbox conversions about, but I guess they are commercial and don't share.

Can't you just search for zetec drawing on Google.
Or type 9 bell housing pattern?
The type 9 bolts straight up.

I have spent hours searching. I reckon most are "commercial" and kept by the people who make adapter plates. The ghetto approach uses card, then steel sheet to make a template, but I am hoping for a "better" solution as getting the input shaft dead central is critical. All the DIY stuff you have to rely on zero wobble on the input shaft.

I have a possibly more useful diagram of a cosworth yb, AFAIK the mounting bolt pattern is the same as a type 9/zetec.

Cosworth yb bellhousing patter

The only help I can offer re the mazda pattern is someone in the following thread had created a dxf for the mazda gearbox flange using a faro arm, however the link is dead, maybe someone who's a member might be able ask for a reupload of the file?

Edited to add: replace the space in the url with an equals sign, I can't post the link when the sign is in the text(possibly due to recent hacks on the site)

Also had another thought, Clairetoo on here had put the mazda kl v6 on an mx5 gearbox in a fury and several mx5's , she may have or know of the relevant cad files that you need.
