Gareth - 9/2/05 at 11:17 AM

Any one in the Colchester area able to loan me or advise on the best rental options for hiring a engine crane/hoist?

also

Any one able to weld an aluminium sump for a donation in beer or cash, or alternatively able to advise me as to a good place to try for a quote?

Regards

Gareth

Gareth,

I have seen some threads about home made hoists that are OK for engine weight.

My garage has pitched roof but is quite wide. I placed a beam on one of the header plates then supported the free end with a prop (used stud partioning timber). The beam was out of an ambulance, aluminium chanel with a runner, it sows you can be a bit inventive. I have a heavy duty hoist but i have heard of people using the winches that are available for trailers - apparently not too expensive.

Of course what ever you decide you are responsible for making sure it is suitable and safe for the job in hand.

Do you have a local hire shop that could drop you one off for the weekend?

HTH
Darren.

Try the motor factor on North Station Road, they used to rent tools and I have rented a hoist from there.

Cheers for the advice Darren, I was thinking of making a frame from some old scaffolding, but as I need to work from the side of the car I was going to look at the options of doing things the recommended way first.

Tim, thanks for the info I will give them a call tommorrow.

Regards

Gareth

LOL! I grew up there!
The best guy there is short and wears glasses, mid aged, if that helps. When I was in UK in '02 it was basically the same except a lot more max p crap littered about. Shame! I goit a freind to bring a mag back to Brazil for me, got Max W instaed of Evo I asked for, it was embarrassing. I didn't say anything as it was kind of him to remember, but hell its so full of crap I cant believe it!

Hi Gareth

I've got a block and tackle (no jokes please) if that helps - I also used a beam placed across my garage.
I'm on Highwoods if that's local to you. What are you building?
