Hi picked up my wee locost today and while pulling it off the trailer the clutch has packed in (just my luck). Can anyone tell me what clutch to buy?
No big money jobs please as just spent the all me car money on buying the car! its a ford xflow 1640 with twin webber 40s running a 4 speed ford box.
Please can anyone help me out? also its got cortina hubs and i want to replace the balljoints at some point can anyone tell me what i should be
buying? top, bottom + trackrod ends? Thanks in advance
Brian
You have only just got it and you have broken it! Shouldnt be to expensive to sort..

Do you mean the clutch is slipping or not clearing --- if the latter it is likely to be the cable or pedal or if the vehicle has been lying up the
clutch plate might just be stuck to the flywheel
If the clutch is slipping then you want a 1600 Cortina/early Sierra 4 speed cluch kit -- the difficulty is the Cortina used different types of
gearbox requiring clutch driven plates with different numbers of spline.
Any decent motor factor should have one ias old stock -- try Partco or as I seen you live in Glasgow "Andrew Watt" (Orr St Bridgeton
and branches) or "Rattery" (near south end of Kingston Bridge)

got it off the trailer and its just like the clutch burnt out or release bearing popped throu the clutch spring on pressure plate loads of smoke!
oh dear but thats just the joys of locosts i guess
Cheers
Brian
If you need a new clutch plate, it's just a matter of counting the splines in the centre and measuring the diameter.
In any case, this one will be Ford Escort MKII 1600.
Shouldn't be dear <grins nervously>
Coould be the clutch is getting a bit too much movement -- after you fit and adjust the new clutch put some kind of stop on the clutch pedal to stop it being depressed too far.
ok guys, sounds like i have a plan for next weekend! Engine out and get it all cleaned up and paint the chassis that i can now get access to!
taken the passenger seat out and the incredibly wet carpet that was under it. car drying out now in the garage (zil, u need to get 1!) keep the new
car dry. not unhappy about my purchase just another locost story.
Cheers All!!

The clutch you want is made now by QH. the part number is MOP MHK5103 and it will cost aront 45-50 quid. You will get a complete clutch kit with
this.
However... 2 things... firstly i have a clutch i removed when i fitted my new one... as it is always best to do this if ur taking the engine out.. you
can have the clutch for nowt if u are skint.
secondly... u say ur clutch is goosed.. what is actually wrong?
The x-flow clutch is famous for sticking if the car isnt being used so all u need to do to solve it if thats the problem is.. attempt to start the car
while in first gear with clutch out. Normally works after 2 or 3 goes.
hope this helps.
PS.. Shouldnt really help you... Zil was gona sell me your carbs and exhaust in Dec
Maybe he just forgot to tell me hes not now
If it's ok with everybody, I'm just going to crawl back under my stone for a bit
<skulks into the shadows>
A troll on ebay should turn up a cheap clutch but beware the posting which should be just under 10 pounds ;-)
I bought 2 complete 20 spline 3 in 1 Valeo Sierra/Cortina 4 speed clutch kits for a fiver each
Quite a few on ebay see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=21654&item=4526264042&rd=1
Listen all i just want it to be perfectly clear that when i picked up the car it was running great, just one of those things. who can tell when these
things are going to happen?? I would like to thank you all for your help with this matter at least now i have a clue about a way 4ward.
Got the car down the ramps from the trailer put it into 1st gear and pulled 4ward seemed like there was no power, accelerated only to be met with
smoke and clutch burning smell. pushed it into driveway and now away in the garage. Have sprayed all the obvious bolts with WD40 in prep for next
weekend.
if there is any1 out there who can lend me a wee engine hoist then i would be eternally gratefull, or have 1 "alkoprop" type thing and would
appreciate a loan of another so can support beams in garage to use friends block and tackle.
Thanks guys
Brian
I'm still buying the clutch
Will look into borrowing an acroprop as well.
Cheers

Zil and Brig there is an Acro prop here you can get a loan of
I thought he wanted an alcopop. Drowning his sorrows already. Acrow props are the answer to a lot of everyday problems
Ive got an engine crane. (Peterborough)

If you're doing the work over the weekend of 19th & 20th, you can borrow my engine hoist. You'll need to collect and return,
tho'
Zil knows where it is!
I can let you borrow one for a week if thats any good?
PS.. i can drop it off for you if that helps?
Cheers J
FAO Brian.
I handed a clutch kit to a slightly bewildered looking Lady at your house earlier on
Hope you got it ok.
The receipt is only in case it needs changed - no other reason...
Guys, i just cant believe the response that i am getting with this car and my requests for help!
If i had known that there was this kind of fellowship (of the locost) i would have bought 1 years ago! I really appreciate this!
Also Hornet, as for the loan of the engine hoist, that would be great! if you could drop it off in cumbernauld village then i would be even more in yr
debt! I would arrange to return it to you though to save you having to do everything! (trying not to completly kick the ass out of it!) When could you
drop it off? or i could come and collect it?
Thanks guys!!
Hi all, Clutch fitted and car running again now! mould just like to thank everyone that offered help when i needed it! old clutch lining on 1 side
of friction plate was pumped and fell apart which was the problem. Big thanks to both Zilspeed for the new clutch and also Hornet for the loan of the
engine hoist and very neat wee alignment tool!
Cheers
Brian
