HELP i had a broken exhaust manifold stud so drilled a hole in it and started screwing in a stud extractor but managed to snap that aswell, tried welding a bolt to it to unscrew it (no good) it wont drill either is there another way or will i have get a new cylinder head any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you get a thin bit in around the extractor and take most of the middle out of the stud. You might be able to tap a thread in what's left.

Try welding a nut placed over the end of the stud extractor using high amps , let it cool a bit then try turning nut clockwise . If nut shears try again , have had to weld several nuts to the same sheared bolt etc in the past to remove them. If all else fails it may be possible to get it removed by an engineering company using spark erosion but may be expensive. Sorry I don't know of a locost method of spark erosion,.H.T.H. Rusty

How much of the extractor is left in it?

I have done the same in the past I used a small die grinder(dremell) and a lot of patiants and ground the extractor out..

I would also recomend binning the easy out ,and buy yourself a heli coil kit I swear by them...

Eazi-outs should be banned

Ditto with the easi-outs, if a stud is so tight it snaps off, an easi-snap hasn't got a hope in hell.

eaziouts are now in the bin never using them again tried allsorts in the end managed to drill it out with small masonry bit and hammer drill (took ages though) just need to enlarge hole and tap a new thread
went through 3 masonry bits and 10 3mm steel bits cheaper than sending head away for repair though

A heli coil insert is much better

Didn't see this in time but when I got a bolt stuck in my bike, my engineering bloke who lives next door said that masonary bits (sharpened if pos) are the ONLY thing that will get an easy-out or bolt out.

I've used this type of stud extractor for years to great effect... They're bloody billiant for winding out the head-studs etc on engines too.

The inventor of "easy" outs should be sent to his grave by a hail of his own "tools"

(If thousands of people buy it, is it a poor design?)

EDIT: If using the "weld on a nut" technique (works well) MAKE SURE you have cooled the stud properly before trying to undo it!!! you don't want it to be soft and expanded when you try to un-do it!!

I've used stud extractors but I alway drill as much of the bolt as possible out and use the biggest size available. The ones in the earlier post only work if you have enough stud to grip and if there's that much left you can usually get them with mole grips.
