Converting from Pinto to Zetec
ethomas - 14/2/05 at 09:30 PM

Hello all,

First of all, let me apologise, I am not building a locost, but this looks like a fantastic forum, so please forgive me

I am putting together an Eagle SS which I bought part finished. It has a 1600 Pinto engine and the a Ford type 3 transmission in it. When looking around the scrappy for a new thermostat housing, I spotted a Scorpio with a minty looking 2l Zetec all setup for RWD use with a 5 speed box.

The kicker? I can pick this whole lot up (complete with pumps, alternator, started ECU, injection system, airbox) for £60!!!

This is about 2x the cost of the thermostat housing I need (if I buy it new).

Not wanting to run before I can walk, I would like to know just how difficult the swap is likely to be, will the MT75 (?) gearbox mate with my cut down Cortina propshaft?

Thanks,

Edward

The MT75 box will not mate to your existing prop without mods...but equally, that isnt a huge problem to overcome.

However, the engine in a Scorpio is not going to be a Zetec (unless someone has fitted it since manufacture)... I forget the correct name for the motor, but it is subtly different to the Zetec found in Mondeos etc. Important if you are considering the availability of aftermarket components...

Is it the duratec engine? Still plenty of tune up available for them as well...

Think you will actually find that it is an I4 2ltr DOHC Unless the zetec has been retro fitted..If it has snap it up ....If not the I4 is not a bad motor just pricy to do a rebuild..word of warning no tuning bits available of the shelf ...I was giving one away on sunday with very little interest?
I have a carbed version in my sierra and its geat fun would be even more fun in a car half the weight, mine will be for sale soon when the tax/test runs out. Comes with top end gasket set + biolts piper cross filter /breather filter ect as I want a zetec.

Piccies here. The16v is pretty much the same engine as was fitted to the Mk5 RS 2000.... The engine rid that only appeared in a couple of models, and for a short amount of time.

These DOHC engines (2ltr variety mainly) had a veru nasty trait of breaking the timing chains .. Yip .. chains. It's also a very heavy lump, could never see where all the weight came from.

More power from a Zetec of similar capacity.

Cheers !!
