pitting on piston - still usable?
200mph - 1/3/05 at 11:37 AM

I received my pistons for a 1700 crossflow yesterday, and one of them has what looks like the result of detionation on the crown. Part of the top and side are pitted and uneven, and discoloured, and the very top ring seems to be seized in place at this point, with a crusty brown residue.

I was inteding replacing the rings anyway, but is this piston still usable, or is it a return to sender job?

opinions appreciated!

cheers
Mark

did a little drawing of where the damage is.

Side skirt takes the load ,so if its damaged it will soon seize solid and knacker the bore ......

yeah I guess if it was just the top I could have them all machined slightly. Am actually really pissed off, as although the guy has offered a refund, it isnt exactly missable, and cant imagine anyone trying to fit, so wtf was he thinking?

just a bit of a time-waste, but means i can start looking out on ebay again

cheers

There are people who stop looking on ebay. I reckon that ebay should be listed as a class B drug at the very least, very addictive.

I had the same problem with my zetec that I got of ebay ...see pic and previous posts ....Seller would not have seen/Known about damage......................
I have since sold it in bits back on ebay showing faults in great detail and ive made all my money back with bits left that I may even make a profit
Going to pick my new motor up tomorow 2ltr focus black top 30000 from a 2002 reg I wont even have to take the head of£250

cool, good things come in the end i guess.

the thing with this guy is there is no way he didnt know about the condition of the piston, but hoped whoever bought it wouldnt mind
