Pinto oil pressure and water temperature sender threads
andyharding - 9/3/05 at 07:39 PM

I'm planning to order a set of gauges from greengauges.com.

The water temperature sendor is available with a NPT or UNF thread. What type of thread is in the Pinto head?

The oil pressure sender is only available with a NPT thread. Is this the same as the oil pressure switch on the Pinto block?

Thanks in advance.

Seem to recall some ntp thread sizes are the same tpi, dia and form as a unf thread but that most ntp threads on cars are ntpt --- ntp tapered.

re last post my memory is playing tricks for pipe thread ID see this url http://www.eldonjames.com/frames/thread.html

Sorry for hi-jack but just out of interest- why'd Ford use an unusual (ie. non-metric) thread?

Only reason I can think of would be that the NPT is fine enough to stop leaks that would occur with metric- but experience tells me that metric is ok for that!

Thanks,
James

Pipe threads have always been an area where imperial/us threads are the norm.

NPT requires some form of sealant to be 100% water-tight. NPTF is self-sealing (the thread is designed to distort when tightened, filling the gaps).

I bet Fords used the cheaper NPT though!

these threads are not unusual, very standard for fluid connection purposes.

Thanks for your help guys.

My conclusions are as follows:

The water temperature sender thread is 1/8 NPT.

The oil pressure sender thread is 1/4 NPT.

GreenGauges.com will supply the required adapters FOC if you order their senders with your gauges.

This is the same as the Crossflow and early zetecs so would make sense.
