Cutting out Pinto
locoboy - 30/3/05 at 08:56 AM

A mate of mine has recently entered into the kit car world and bought a second hand 7 with a 2.0 pinto.

The basic spec is
2.0 Pinto
single downdraught twin choke webber
points ignition
manual choke
standard cam
manual fuel pump

There is an issue he has described as cutting our when you dip the clutch, ie you drive along and then when you dip the clutch to coast, the revs drop as normal and then it cuts out.

Any ideas as to what the issue could be?

I had never tried it in my 2.0 pinto so i gave it a go last night and mine just went back to tickover speed and stayed there.

Col,

im not an engine expert, but i would look at timing, condition of distributor, condition of ignition electrics in general (points, condensor, leads, plugs etc)firstly.

Is the tickover revs set high enough?

I have heard problems on carb side with either basic set up, blocked air filter or even float chamber emptying for some reason. Is it the std carb for the engine?

It might be worth trying to get it tuned at a garage.

HTH,
Darren.

Clean the idle jets, check for water in the float chamber, check all the manifold flange nuts for tightness, general check for vacumn leaks, if the engine has points check the points gap.

Does it idle normally? Sounds like idle jet problem.

On pinto f2 and hot rod engines there are probs with vibration and high pressure fuel pumps that cause the floats to break off of their carriers allowing the chambers to overfill and flood the carb but only during over run. Check for this and a VERY strong smell of petrol.

After speaking to him last night to answer a few of your questions:

It does idle ok once its warm
The points gap has not been checked by him so that will be done
The manifold buts all look secure
No OBVIOUS signs of vacuum leaks

Will keep you posted on how it goes

Thanks for all you replies - i suspect he may be along to join the fold in good time!
