Hello

Having a bad bolt day. So i ordered replacement studs from burton, and they dont fit, at first i thought they where just tight, then i snapped one taking it out. Anyway, does anybody know the thread? I've tried a few and none seem to fit, a few close, but they are always too tight, i get a few turns in, and then they get solid.

Any ideas?

Dumb question - are you screwing in the right end? (if you pardon the expression...)

Some studs have different threads at each end - one fine, the other coarse - so that undoing the nut doesn't screw the stud out of the head. If you pick the wrong end, you'll get the results you have experienced.

If you have the same thread both ends... just ignore me.

Tried both ends just in case, but neither fit. Its a course thread going into the head.

what's the state of the head? would need a quick run through with a tap as they're rusted up or anything? just on the off chance..

The studs came out fairly easily , but retappnig it isnt a bad idea. I've no idea what the thread is though.

Another random thought - what's the diameter of the stud? If it's 5/16" it could be that you've been given M8 studs by mistake - they'll jam after 1 or 2 turns.
Try an M8 nut on one of the studs; if it goes on with little effort then it's the wrong one, as the Xflow is all imperial (UNF or UNC).
Mind you, Burtons are pretty good, and I wouldn't expect them to get it wrong - but you never know!

the inlet and exhaust studs are definately 5/16 unc as i've just ordered some cap head screws for mine and they fit perfectly.

In which case, try an M8 nut on the ones you've got. M8 and 5/16UNC look almost identical, but jam very rapidly.

Studs are 5/16UNC (Into head) with 5/15UNF locknuts. Cheers

Metric nuts have a Number on them - usually -8- . Imperial nuts have a Letter on them.

Thanks for the suggestions, went out and got myself a 5/16UNC tap, and removed a fantastic amount of crap from the holes.

So yeah its definately 5/16th, the strange thing was teh original studs went in and out no bother.

Re-tapped the one i sheared, bolted up the manifold, stuck the exhaust on, and now all i need to do is get a can thats going to get em somewhere within the noise limit
