Just got the GT cam through the post, and am not sure it's correct. Is there anyway to be able to tell if it's a 1300 GT cam, or an 1100, 1600 etc. .

Haynes mentions colour combinations, however the one I have removed has no colour on it, whereas the new one has some red on it. This doesn't mean
there was or was not whie as well . . .
any ideas?
Sorry but unless your cam came from the dealers then there is very little to tell you what spec your cam is. The only easy cams to identify use to be
pinto cams.
1 dimple on the shaft was 1.6, 2 dimples was 1.6gt/2.0. Other than that you you come down to measuring base circle, total lift, duration of lift,
timing over lap,start and finish angles of lift and then you get out the refernce books and start working it out manually according to the spec for
each grade of camshaft.
1.3std
1.3gt
1.3fast road
etc
etc and then you ve got the odd special home grinder/local specialist lobe profiles.
There are several markings on the shaft to indicate the part number. What I don't have is a way of interpreting or comparing them with other known
shafts.

Yeah but my mountain of eng bits are all pinto,as JJG said earlier they are easy to ID.
The only info i have on x/flow cams regarding coding is any yellow on cam and its 1.3 LC or HC red and white is 1.3 2V and red is 1.6 2V.
This info is taken from another site,so its only as good as the person who posted in other words who knows.

I'd phone vulcan engineering as they would deffinatly know for sure.
If it's a Kent cam then the marking is stamped on the flywheel end of the cam. Not sure about other makes!

Agreed, but the comment still holds true.
the marking (inus the year stuff) is
6250 (meaning its a cam) followed by CC
there is an 8 and B either side if the gear tooth followed by these

if you have a ford cam and the number on it is
771m 6250ca it is a 1300GT
771m6250ba it is a 1600GT.
be carfull as there are some long duration cams being used in the championship.which are not legal (in the locost championship)

Yes this is a ford cam. My original starts of 701M, and the replacement starts 71F (or poss 711F - bit hard to tell) I understood this gives year of
manufacture and original model it was fitted to.
The site I got that info from suggests the letter suffix is the revision, so is a 6250 CC a 3rd generation CA 1300GT cam?

This year they did not check them but my understanding is that they will be checking next year. They will be looking at lift at various degrees of
rotation. If that does not meet with the information they have they will remove the cams and have them checked by Kent cams. As I said some people
have been using long duration cams with 300 degree duration rather than 272 which is standard on a GT cam. This would give you about 8 bhp advantage
over a standard GT cam. If you are going to race in the championship and cannot be 100% certain that you have the right lift and duration then I would
buy a Kent 103/4 as I think the club is serious about checking them.

Hi Darryl, I'm trying to build a car for next season, but wont be ready till at least half way through season now. These cam checks you talk about,
obviously i've no intention of cheating and hope no-one else has(i might be too naive for this game) but I havn't built my own engine so wouldn't know
how to remove/refit bits like that, what sort of degree of help would the scrutineers provide for this type of check ?

good question that......the way it works is that the engine would be sealed at the meeting and at a time and place of your convenience a scrutineer
would watch it being removed and take it away. I would expect my engine builder to do it for free. If the cam was ok the club would pay reasonable
rebuild costs. If it was not ok the cost is down to you

Just got through to someone at Ford (who is 100 times more helpfull than matey yesterday)
Here's the deal.
701M 6250 cc is from my original 1300 engine (car is a GL not GT)
711F 6250 cc is from a 1600 (which is what 'specialist' sent me)
Darryl is 100% correct with 771M 6250 ca being from the 1300 GT.

Clears it up a bit, unfortunately for me I bought mine from a guy who changed his mind about which series he was going to race in, so looks like i've
got to learn abit quick !
