Rev limiter
David Jenkins - 18/4/05 at 01:20 PM

Can anyone recommend a decent rev limiter at a sensible price? (i.e. cheap!). A shift light would be nice, but not essential. Now that I'm starting to push my car a bit it's clear that I can't blast away down the road AND watch my rev counter! There's just too much going on!

My main wish is to know that I'm not going to blow my engine by getting too enthusiastic or careless.

rgds,

David

You can get rev limiting rotor arms for the pinto, and i assume you can also get them for the cross flow. (Think the standard ones cut the ignition at about 6750rpm).

There is one pictured here:

All depends if you want an electric one or not i guess.

David, what distributor are you using? Bosche distributors can be fitted with a centrifugal cut out type rotor arm. Some V.Ws use them ie early Golf GTI , type 2s {transporters} Available with various cut out speeds ,try your local motor factors?. Hard type cut out but cheaper than electronic type or another engine rebuild. Not sure if they are available for Fords own distributors H.T.H. Rusty

Cheap alternative is a bolt or block of wood behind the the throttle

Rev cut-off rotors are also available for the Lucas side entry distributer --- but not cheap

They are also pretty rough on the engine when they do cut in.

I have Omex seqential shift lights on race car and found them brilliant, could have done with rev limiter at mallory when missed gear change Omex have combined unit cheapest place Rally Design

why not convert to a megajolt light ignition
it will then have a shift light and revlimit
and no point to set
cheers dave

I don't have any points! I've converted to the Valencia Bosch dizzy.

David ,what engine speed do you want to limit yours to? may possibly have an old VW rotor if i haven't thrown it out

Welcome in the world of electronics??

Does your car have a Coil?? Yes it has,

Does it has a Rpm signal, yes it has..

just build your own rev limitter
and shift light

- needings:

- PIC16F84, 20Mhz
- Buz11 Power Mosfet
- 4KOhm Res
- 10KOhm Res

and the pic stuff

Think with 6pounds you have it done!

Cheers,

TKS

I did consider it - but there's all sorts of hassles dealing with power line interference, plus designing the mechanism for "interfering" with the coil supply at max revs, and so on.
In the end I usually find that the ready-made kit is easier and more reliable.
As for revs - I'm aiming for 5750, maybe 6000rpm. I'd rather have an electronic unit, as I've heard that the rotor units can be a bit fierce.

David
(BTW: I have a possible supplier for a unit - can't say any more just now! )

I'm fitting Megajolt Lite , but I thought that the rev limit function only worked if connected to some other means of cutting the sparks?

I was wondering about setting an ignition retard at the rev limit i.e. drop the timing back from maximum to say 10degrees at 6000 rpm , would this have the effect of stopping the engine revving or would it do much worse things!!

I believe that the 'soft' rev limiters stop every alternate spark, to limit the power output.

On my Megasquirtnspark-extra it retards the timing to 10deg btdc at the soft rev limit and cuts fuel at the hard limit. I believe that the problem with cutting sparks and not fuel is with the fuel burning in the exhaust.

David, have you thought about building a MegasquirtnSpark-extra with EDIS, you could use it for ignition only and for fuel at a later date?
