Ihave a tool for removing valve stem oil seals, they are like a pair of pliers with curved jaws and a lip on the lower edge (when stood on end with handles uppermost) . have used pliers in the past ,found the best method was to lightly grip the seal and rotate until loosened before trying to pull seal from guide . Using the correct tool follows the same procedure can't say it worked better though. Any decent engine recondioners should be able to remove them for you, probably cheaper than a Ford dealer?

I have the same issue with my XE engine. One bit of advice I would give is to make a sleeve to protect the lifter bores when removing the seals, whatever way you do it. Be very easy to scratch them!
