bike carbs on zetec
Markp - 4/6/05 at 06:23 PM

After having a couple of xflows in the car I feel it is time to upgrade to a more modern engine, so if I start to get the parts now, I can put it in over the winter.

I'm thinking of going for bike carbs on the 2l zetec. I have read a bit about people using r1 carbs, does it matter from what age r1 they come off?? also what car would you recommend the 2l zetec comes from?

As you can see I'm just getting started on this so I'm sorry for my ignorance.

There will be plenty of more posts to follow

Thanks for your help

Mark.

engine is easy...pre aug 95 so you dont need a cat.....So that means Mondeo 2l You will also want fly wheel ,water pump and sump from 1.8 l escort zetec.....

Carbs on mine are 1998...Work done by Bogg Bros...When I asked why they prefered the r1 carbs they just said they had more experiance with them and can virtually get them spot on whilst on the bench....Blackbird carbs are 42mm and beter quality(Honda says it all)...I am well looking forward to getting mine running....

Gearbox is easy, type 9 with mix and match clutch or mt75 with standard zetec clutch and 19mm spacer on mt75 thrust bearing.....

The zetec install can be done locost style or if you have more to spend sky is the limmit...

There are some pics of mine in my archive under engine....

On the subject of the water pump this needs changing as it runs the wrong way .But But But the guys at Scholar Engines tell me that they run there race engines the wrong way with no ill affect........

thanks for the replys. Are 1998 r1 carbs the same as 2001 or have they been modifyed. I think I will be going to Boggs Bros too. looks very good.

If it's already on the road you can use what engine you want, not pre 95. It will be tested same as any other kit.

its already on the road just wondered if there was a better engine depending on age. early Vauxhall corsa gsi were better than the later type when it went zetech, wasn't sure if the same applied.

cheers mark

Not strictly true...your emissions are set at SVA time....so if you had an xflow at sva, then your zetec will be tested to crossflow standards...regardless of age.

I would say any silver top would be the easiest to fit as the water pump on the blacktop can't be swapped for one to rotate the other way and hence you need an extra pulley / retain the power steering pump.

Ergo..any silvertop, 2litre
