Front xr4x4 diff
carnut - 1/7/05 at 11:00 AM

Why doesn't anyone use these?

mookaloid - 1/7/05 at 11:01 AM

I didn't because my Indy had brackets already in for the rear one

You'd also need custom made driveshafts.

You would also have to turn it upside down to get it to run the right way, leading to breather and lubrication difficulties.

It runs the same way as a rear diff actually

Are the ratios the same?? Not got the manual in front of me but isn't there a chain drive with a reduction to the front prop shaft ?

Quite right too, I stand corrected. You're still driving it the wrong way though, and it wont be the easiest thing to fit due to the already mentioned driveshaft problems. How is the nearside transfer drive shaft located anyway? Looks to be a lot of work when you can use a rear diff so much easier.

One of the drive shafts goes through the sump on the 2.0l XR4x4 that Ben Copeland stripped.

Right you are. And i guess it might not enjoy that for too long.

The ratio's exactly the same as the rear, Mix - there's no reduction in the transfer chain.

Fitting shafts isn't that terrible. As in a dax rush 4x4 front, you can do away with the intermediate shaft and plug two driveshafts straight in the diff. You have to machine a different oil seal for the side that usually has the intermediate shaft, that's all. Of course you'd then need to lengthen both standard front shafts if you want the diff in the middle.

If you want a light alternative to the normal sierra rear diff, the Landrover Freelander diff is a popular choice.

Yep, you'd need to mount the sump as well

In which case could you not use it for a VTEC engine? Just need to find a RWD gearbox which will rotate the "wrong" way...

JoelP - 3/7/05 at 08:56 AM

hold on a minute! if the diff is going the wrong way, and the engine too, and the gearbox, you'd still be moving forward with the diff running backwards! and if it was a backward spin engine, with a normal box, you'd have 5 reverse gears, but with the diff at least happy thinking all is well!
