I've just fitted a brand new 907 can to my brand new stainless manifold, which is fitted to my old bike engine.
I've tried starting it a few times and am getting quite a bit of white smoke
Both from the end of the can and directly off the manifold. The
manifold is hotter than I can touch.
Is this likely to be coming from the manifold and can, or more worryingly from the engine itself?

It's normal for exhast manifolds to get hotter than you can touch, I have the scars to prove it. The smoke may well be just oil burning off from the metal , possibly used when made . Get the engine nice and hot the smoke should gradually disappear . when you installed it your hands may have been oily , this adds to smoke on startup .If smoke continues after exhaust is really hot it could be a problem but it' should clear
A friend of mine tells the tale of running his fingers along his bike exhaust. He remarked at how smooth it was - almost as if it were lubricated. Soon leater he noticed the smell of burning flesh. He can remember looking at his dripping fingers and wondering why he could feel no pain. Exhausts get hotter than you can safely touch.

The smoke off the exhaust worried me the first time, but it's just the grease coating, it'll soon burn off and it's nothing to worry
about. As mentioned above, they can get unbelievably hot within seconds of starting the engine - I've burnt myself but can't claim to have
melted my fingers I'm afraid

Yep it'll just be grease and fingerprints etc burning off. My workmate has just finished a years worth of fitting and testing eberspacher heaters
to vehicles. He usually fires them up around teatime, when we're working overtime, cause he's a sick barsteward and they always smell like
cooking chips. Sometimes the bench is covered in drool
