20XE Caterham Sump
MikeRJ - 4/8/05 at 08:41 PM

Just bagged myself one of these, but it's just the alloy sump, nothing else. It's quite shallow, and I think was originaly used with a foam insert?

I've found a few negative comments about the foam insert, but the sump is so shallow I a bit worried that a traditional baffle may not be very effective. Anyone else used the Caterham sump? Will the standard Vuaxhall windage plate fit or was this a special Caterham part?

I haven't got one personally, but I've heard other Caterham owners say that the foam does disintegrate, and needs changing every 12 months.
If you have any more questions, I can put it on the Lotus7 site for you.
Cheers John

Mike,

I think NsDev and Northy are both using this sump. you'll need a modded pickup to go with it, i think you're meant to change the foam every 3000 miles or so iirc, roughly every oil or every other oil change or something.

Ned.

Cheers chaps, forgot I'd posted this!

Caterham windage tray is same as std Vx one, and Caterham pick up pipe is same as std Vx, just with the end chopped off.

Any more questions, just ask.

Yup, I'm using this sump.

I'd like to go dry sumped but the price of pumps is putting me off until I can get one from the USA!

Yes, the sump should have foam in it.

Use the proper caterham foam (not all fuel tank foam resists heat enough apparently) and it'll be fine

I have spoken to several caterham owners now who sprint HPC's with the wet sump and no probs, even on very sticky (but road legal) tyres.

That sounds very encouraging!

I had a look at the Caterham online shop, and it shows a foam insert under "K Series engine parts". Is it the same part or should I give them a ring?

Best give them a call, that one's for the k-series.

They will sort you one for the XE though. A pickup pipe too if you need to.
