I have been looking around at zetec engines and am becoming a bit confused.
What is the difference between black/silver and red top engines?
And which one is best suited to the locost when using mt75 box and webber carbs?
any info much appreciated.
phase 1 and 2 engines are silvertops. So called because the cam cover was bare metal Phase 1 had DOHC on the CAM cover, Phase 2 had Zetec.
Phase 3 engine is the blacktop (black cam cover) and was produced from mid-98 onwards
Phase 3 engines are supposedly good for more power - have teflon coated pistons etc. However installation is not as straightforward as with th earlier
engines.
If you've got to got through SVA, an early 1800 (pre-95) will cause you the least headaches. A 2.0 won't be much harder but you'll
normally want to change the water pump for one from a 1.8 (the 2.0 spins off the back of the drive belt making installation trickier). If using a 2.0,
you'll probably also want to fit the lighter 1.8 flywheel.

If you want a good general info on the Zetec you can try the following site :

Although I don't have that much of an experience with engines, I've decided to go for the third phase 2.0 Zetec. First of all it's
easier to shorten the sump by myself (two pieces sump with the lower part made of steel - on the other hand you can buy a shortened sump for the 1st
or 2nd phase but I haven't seen the 3rd phase on sale yet). Plus I can use a bolt-on supercharger installation (I wasn't sure if I can use
it on the 1st or 2nd phase engine). And last but not least, the engine cost me 350 quids for 2001 with 20k miles or so.
I used a phase 3 engine which had some advantages and disadvantages.
The sump in a phase 3 is a two part half tin half alloy, which means yo can modify it easily. I think that phase 1 and 2 are cast alloy.
You can use the standard water pump depending on where you mount your altenator.
I used the standard 2.0 ltr flywheel and back plate with the friction plate off a sierra.
Like stephan says it may be easier to get one of the earlier ones through the SVA as the emissions will be a bit slacker.
Will the phase 3 sump fit the phase 1&2 block?
All depends on what you want from it and how much money you can chuck at it ?
The locost aproach would be a 1800 zetec from a pre Aug 1995 escort/orion/fiesta... Expect to pat around £50 and up .
If you bin the injection and go for carbs then you are looking at around 135-155 bhp depending on cams ecu ect.
You will get the lighter fly wheel /correct water pump and shallower sump compared with the mondeo lump.
The engines in generall are very good and will often do well over 150k.
If you decided to do a rebuild then you are looking at £300 worth of bits from Burtons alone.
This would buy you a Phase 3 2lt with less than 20k on the clock.
to use the latter engines your going to need injection as you would find it very hard to get through the sva on carbs.
So like I say depends on how much you want to spend..The costs can soon add up.

Would i be right in thinking that both the type9 or the MT75 boxes can be used with the Zetec, what advantages/disadvantages do the two have, only i got one of each.
The MT75 is stronger and has a better gearchange arrangement (IMO), downside is that you can't change the ratios. The type 9 can be fitted with
better ratios but at a cost of about £400 once uprated to the power you should be getting from the zetec.
The ratios of the standard MT75 are fine apart from first is a little low in a light car, but I suspect the type 9 in standard form is no different.
