I have a water leak around one of my core plugs, its a VW golf block...any advice about how to remove and after replace? Never done it before, been told its not difficult!

I removed the core plugs from my Pinto by hammering a screwdriver through the middle of the plug and then levering it out. Seemed to work OK!

The guy who rebored the block for me fitted the new plugs, so can't help on that one.

Removal is as above, or just screwdriver (or drift) towards one side to spin it so you can grab it out with some grips.

To replace, just smear some non-setting gasket compound (hermetite blue) around the whole edge lip of the new core plug and tap in squarely with a large socket which just fits inside the plug. Rotating the hitting around in the
12,6,3,9 (o'clock) sequence.

The instant gasket will seal it till the plug corrodes and seals itself in.

screwdriver and hammer a little crude but not really any different from the "proper" approach, usually a big self-tapper though it and a slide hammer.

Replacement - clean up the hole properly, get a piece of tube that just fits inside the OD of the back of the new plug (the pro's would turn up a nice drift from ally or nylon) apply a !!!slight!!! smear of blue goo round the new plug then hammer it in, job done.
