Hi
I have a sierra 2.3 diesel estate rusting slowly on my drive.
I plan to use the rear suspension and gearbox if poss. Can anyone tell me which engines will fit this box, and whether the gear ratios are ok with a
petrol engine
I would prefer a 1700 crossflow or Pinto.
PS what is a Sierra type 9 gearbox?
In the 2.3D Sierra you should have a "type 9" box. Its a steel cased 5 speed 'box, usually fitted to low/mid spec Sierras.
Almost any Ford engine will bolt straight up to it, x-flow, pinto, CVH etc. If its a FWD configuration engine you'll probably need to "fettle" it
slightly (engine mount, oil pickup and maybe sump.
If you decide to use a CVH engine, use a 1.6 rather than a 1.8 as the 1.8 is designed for economy rather than power and the 1.6 is more powerful.
As for the gear ratios, even if you get it all together and they're not to your liking, you can just change the differential gearing..
HTH
Cheers for that
How about an XR3i engine?
Anyone know if it will fit?
The XR3i engine will bolt up to your gearbox no problems, the only problem could be space. In a stock "book" chassis, room for the engine is limited,
thats not to say that it would be impossible, engines bigger than the CVH have been used, it just might be a bit of a squeeze especially with the fuel
injection gubbins to go under the bonnet too.
Anyway, bugger the XR3 engine, theres always a couple of RS Turbos in the salvage section of Autotrader, fit a dump valve and "whoooosh" your way away
from the lights
Wasnt the 2.3 oil burner a pug engine if so wil the box be type 9 or mt75 or something weird?
I'm 99% certain that the 2.3D uses a Type9. Its easy enough to check, just see if it looks like this (bottom one)

Good luck
well i just had to din I ? "get a blade engine in it........"
you know you want too........
As most diesels rev to around 4,500 tops, wont something, diff or gearbox, have really whacky ratios for a petrol engine conversion?
Or will the taller gearing actually be an advantage in a locost, like 40 in forst rather than 30 (for example)?

well actually it comes with its own 6 speed box, so if you bolt it up to a type 9 5 speed that makes....let me see.....30 gears.........mmmmmnow that
is to many in it ?
XR 3i will fit just needs imagination, once I can get this to work will post photographs.
Major biggy is the inlet manifold needs cut and shut to prevent a bonnet bulge from hell.
