Micra Rad fixings
donut - 28/1/03 at 07:47 AM

How have people with micra rads fixed theirs to the chassis? Have you had to make the brackets or are there suitable brackets out there. The rad i have is from a late model.

Hi Andy,

So it turned up then! Does it look good?
Sorry don't know about mountings though.

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark

Looks the dogs mate!! Very happy, i just gotta try and sort out a way of fixing it to the chassis???????

Andy,

Took a look at mine for you. Its hard to see from the picture, but there is an L shape tacked to the front of the chassis (we'll call this the top mount) and a longer L shape tacked to the bottom (lets call this bottom mount - can be seen where horn bolts to it)

The radiator in theory then "lies" against these two mounts, via a steel margin (at 90 degrees from the rad) thats attached to the rad core. On the micra i think some sort of thin angle needs tacking down the side so it can attach to the mounts.

The further out the bottom mount is, the more acute the angle (so it fits under the nosecone).

Just an aside, the fan goes to the front of the rad.

Hope this helps (and apologies for simple language before i get shot down)

Hi Mark

Bit hard to see but i can definately see the bottom mount. I'll have to wait till i get the chassis so i can do some measuring.

Are you sure the fan goes on the outside? One chap on here has the same rad as me and his fan is on the inside!

What radiator did you get in the end?

Cheers

Andy

My ST was a rolling chassis and had an escort Mk2 already in it, so i didn't need the Micra one.

Now you've got me on the fan! I took it out of the scrap micra myself (with Wadders), and (until this moment when challenged) could swear it was front fan, but thinking about it, it could well have been on the engine side.

Let me come back to you.

Just last month got my rad and fan from older style Micra- the fan was definately on the inside!

Cheers James! Isn't there a way to tell if a fan is suck or blow?

Anyone got a foolproof method?

Cheers.

Mark/James

Have a look at the fan in your office, motors normally run clockwise

It's both... sucks one side and blows the other!

Seriously though, as the fan is the engine side of the radiator it must suck through the rad and blow the warm air towards the engine- there isn't really much other way it could work otherwise it'd be blowing out of the front of the car!

HTH,

James

Just run the engine for a bit. Whe the fan kicks in you can find out in no time.

bob - 12/2/03 at 03:16 PM

And i thought i could be painfull.

Just power the fan up and see which way it goes, the shape of the blades will denote wether its suck or blow

God damn, just run the friggin' engine...

Just finished mounting my micra rad----initially with the fan on the outside-------then after looking at a manual it shows it on the inside , so this where it now lies.

as for brackets, it needsd a bit of jiggery pokery. I'll put some pictures of mine on the photos section --phil m rad

Well sorry for trying to help a fellow locoster!!

I'll leave turning fans on to them two Russian birds from tatu i think (or Mr Robbie Williams depending on orientation).

Now they're two girls who I wouldn't care if they suck or blow.

Don't know if this thread is still on-going but here goes.

I fitted a Micra rad to my MK-Indy.

The fan is definitely on the engine side, the same side as the temp sensor and rad outlets.

I removed the steel casing that encases the radiator (and cut off the plastic securing lugs that it attached to) leaving four plastic mounting points on the radiator (two top, two bottom).

I then made up custom brackets to fit these which was a pain but the end result is fine.

I some pics below that may be useful.

If you want a really neat fan which goes ahead of the rad, a Mk3 cavalier with air con has a very thin, efficient fan.

Are you all sure a Micra rad is man enough for the job, I havent got my rad yet, but a rad designed to cool 45BHP has got to struggle cooling a motor churning out 120BHP unless you know different?

if you are using this rad/fan combination, why can't you change the polarity of the fan so it runs backwards?

Metal hippy's method of testing the fan is far too complcated, the best method is to stick you finger in while it is running. If the blood ends up on the engine it sucks, if it ends up on your trousers. it blows!

u can reverse the power but u'll burn out the bushes in no time
