Can anyone give some advice on if a 1.8 Lotus Elise ECU will work on a 1.6 elise engine? or do i need to find a 1.6 ecu from an mgf or any other rover of a similar year?
on my metro you couldnt mix the 1.4 ecu with the 1.8 if that indicates anything
chris
not sure, i think the 1.4 is quite different to the 1.6 & 1.8. But i'm not sure. I think the 1.8 is just a bored out 1.6?
it was all to do with the fueling and igntion/timing etc from the flywheel
agreed - its a long shot but an elise 1.8 ecu is available and i'm hoping it will work.
I don't know much about the Elise system but I assume Lotus did the sensible thing and just zeroxed the MGF security system.
it might just work if ------
On Rover k engines the Engine ECU is tied directly to security system and the engine flywheel reluctor ring.
On the 200/400/25/45 the flywheel reluctor ring has a code built in that matches the the code in both the engine ecu, and the security ecu. Change
any one and the security and engine ECU have to be reprogramed via Rover Test book.
The security ECU on the Metro/200/400/25/45 was a Lucas 5as or 10as and should look like the black box in the picture below
There were also a number of changes made on whole engine management system over the years in particular the engine sensor changed in type and moved
location and the ignition system changed as it evolved from mems 1 to Mems 3.
As far as I know the 5 different flywheel code combination exist so the odds of the code on the engine match the ecus are 5 to 1. Swap the parts over
and the ECU should get the right code,
The 1.8 engine may have the MAP built into the inlet manifold --- if this is the case switch the manifolds over on K16 engines always *** FIT A NEW
INLET MANIFOLD GASKET***.
The crank sensor on later 1.8 was on the opposite side engine.
Other sensors may have different plugs.

thanks britishtrident. I think i'm even more confused now!! I didn't realise i'd need the security module to fit an ecu to the engine to make it work....I might be better finding an ecu with security module from a 1.6 rover engine?
its all coming back to me now yes I needed the security box and the ecu from the same car to work together otherwise immobiliser kicked in
thanks, thats useful to know.
and the key fobs .
I checked with the ATP site Lotus ECU are exactly the same part number as MGF ecus so the security system must be the exactly same. The MGF used the
Lucas 5AS security ECU. I know there is a work around for some Rover models I'll do some digging. An alternative is a GEMS ECU but that costs
££££££
thanks guys. heres the link to the one i have in mind

do you think this will work on my 1.6 from 1997?
Is there a way i can identify from looking at my engine or wiring to see if the above ecu will be compatible?

Lotus did do their own ECU for at least one version of elise. I saw one of the prototypes. It made 120 BHP over the MGF's 118 as I recall.
I wouldn't guarantee that the elise engine is identical to the MG though.
have a look at www.talonsportscars.com
Dudley - the boss can sort out any issues of aligning a mems ecu with a 5As immobiliser or a key fob.
I remember reading that the ECU Lotus used made the engine much smoother than the equivalent in the MG, so it obviously had some differences.
