I'm losing a lot of expensive oil to my catch tank and I want to keep it.

Any ideas?

I have a shortened sump (which doesn't help) and vent it directly from the crankcase breather to a catch tank. I'm now planning to connect the breather up to the rocker cover instead and then vent from there to the catch tank. Rocker cover, couple of holes, short steel pipes, weld etc

Is there a better way?

Is your motor ready for a rebore or new rings?

I vent from the crankcase breather through a pipe to the ground. Pipe is about 1.5m long, and I don't lose anything.

im with David, sounds like a problem with rings, or..have you fitted a breather pipe adaptor and removed the seperator?

Yes I have fitted a straight through adapter instead of the oil separator - so perhaps it would help solve it to rig that up again but without the spring valve.

I feared it might be blowing past the pistons too. But the engine is quite newly rebuilt (2000 miles ago) to a decent spec and should be ok. It doesn't SEEM to breathe v. heavily through the vents.

But then I'm probably in denial.

Part of the problem might be my enthusiatic driving on the 50 mile round trip to work and back on winding B roads on an almost daily basis. So lateral oil surge perhaps?

or could it be the head gasket is leaking to an oilway? how likely is that?

If I just connect a pipe from the vent valve to the floor, and remove the valve spring, on my Pinto, will this solve the problem of oil coming out of the oil filler cap?

Yeah, I should have added that I have retained the oil seperator. I think if you don't you will have some problem with oil from the crankcase being driven up the breather pipe, and particularly on a long hard drive this will result in oil loss.

Rob, sorry mate I can't advise from my experience as you see, and I'm not familiar with the pinto.

I had the same problem with my xflow powered westy. Cure was to send crankcase breather to rocker cover (without the vent valve in the way), and another pipe from rocker cover to a catch tank. Problem solved.

It worked like magic..
I modified the rocker cover last night, had a long drive today and found just a few spots of oil in the catch tank where there would have been nearly 1/2 pint otherwise.
