Zetec Cooling - for those with no heater
muzchap - 16/5/06 at 04:43 PM

Hi guys,

This is my final zetec cooling setup.

**UPDATED - THANKS FOR COMMENTS**

Anyway - here it is:

Here's one on the car - the rocker cover is a placeholder - have a very sexy sprayed one

I'll try and get some better pics - once I have all of the Mikalor hose clamps on - yup blowing that budget!

Only one hose to the engine & thermostat? No flow then I assume they are connected.

The feed from the water pump should go into the engine and then into the top hose.

The feed from the bottom of the rad goes into the water pump - this is cold water - that goes through the engine - comes out of thermostat - travels down pipe into top of radiator

Obviously the engine and the thermostat are connected - I am merely showing the pipework.

As stated the other 2 pipes on the thermostat (underneath) should be blocked off

Opps sorry, flowcharts were never my strong point

stevebubs - 16/5/06 at 06:32 PM

You're missing the rad bypass pipe used when the thermostatic is closed ....

Bit of pipe and an offcut of appropriate diameter bar

Sorry that is wrong, wrong, wrong.
As steve says:
You will have no flow as there is no thermostat bypass therefore you will get localised boiling in the block causing BIG probs.
You need the bypass flow to keep the heat throughout the head and block even and to transfer the heat into the thermostat before the main mass of water heats up.
If you run like this you run the risk of blowing head gaskets and warping the head.

muzchap - 16/5/06 at 08:57 PM

Uh?

This is how the 'race' zetecs are plumbed in?

Would somebody care to alter the pic to show me how they recommend doing it?

I find it flows very simply around the engine - the only bits that are blocked off are those for the heater matrix out and in? Which I dont use.

BKLOCO - 17/5/06 at 04:32 AM

If you either drill the thermostat or remove it this will work but not with a standard Ford stat it wont.

Macbeast - 17/5/06 at 04:49 AM

Loop the heater outlet and inlet ?
I think that's what provides the bypass in a Pinto.

Schrodinger - 17/5/06 at 05:48 AM

Looking from the rear of the car take a pipe from the small left outlet on the thermostat housing and T into the pipe to the bottom of the rad.
The racers probably do run with no thermostat.

lcsautos - 17/5/06 at 03:54 PM

agree link into the bottom hose from the stat housing bypass
and for the tech minded people no need to worry about hot water not going through the rad as when the stat opens it blocks off the bypasss pipe to the bottom hose so the only route it can go is through the top hose to rad to be cooled Rescued attachment do it like this.JPG

This is how mine is plumbed in.

Alternatively, drill 3mm hole in thermostat.

up you go old thread

Just a question here:
Bottom hose feed from radiator to thermostat. Does it matter if I put the big T directly on the water pump?
Adjusted Muzchaps pic to my reality

forgot the pic

this is the way i have done it on my silvertop

the two hoses coming from the bottom rad hose provide the flow when the thermostat is closed - once open the flow goes through the blue top rad hose - the expansion tank hose should come in to the bottom too - water expands needs somewhere to go - the tank - the two smaller breathers - from the thermostat housing and top of rad are just to help with airlocks..

paulf - 20/4/08 at 01:47 PM

Mine is connected like that and works fine, i didnt connect the brether pipe to the rad, just from the top of the thermostat housing to the header tank and teed the header tank to the outlet from the thermostat.

ok
But my main concern was if it make any difference to put the T directly to the waterpump

timex - 20/4/08 at 06:07 PM

This is how we have done ours.

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=showphoto&photo=rsz_Plumbing.jpg

We did first run it without at thermostat but strugled to get to temp. Very important on Zetec`s or any engine for that mater that they run at optimum temp for combustion and not too hot to cause detonation.

The formostat by pass is so important on a Zetec to stop hot spots in the head during warm up.

paulf - 20/4/08 at 07:32 PM

My car has the tee directly at the waterpump output, i made a steel fitting that joins the water pump outlet ,bottom hose and bypass together.
