i have a escort 1.6 dohc [early z-tec i think]it is k reg and has got quite a decent engine in it .so what i am wondering is could i fit it to my locost and if so what gearbox would i use what clutch and what about that horible cat can it be binned or does it stay.would it make it mutch more difficult to pass the sva or notand what about the tuneing aspects are they good or not.i have noticed one member on the site has used this engine.i would like to build my car once and not be doing engine swaps rather than driveing it.allso what bits would i have to keep off the escort and could i use the number plate
No probs using the engine. will bolt staight on to a Ford type 9 or MT75 gearbox (both cheap and available) clutch will be a Ford item depending on
which gearbox. Mounts no probs as you make your own or find some that fit from another car. The age of the engine means that you, at the moment, do
not need a cat. You will need to source either Weber carbs or throttle bodies or adapt the Ford fuel injection. It's not the cheapest engine to
fit but should be reliable and give good performance.
One last thing, don't think of fitting the engine just because you have it as you can pick up a 1800/2000 for about £400 and they will cost the
same to fit and give more power..get one from a crash damaged pre 95" Mondeo or insurance write off and you will be unlikely to buy a poor one.
i have a type 9 whitch is of a cast steel caseing but i have a box what i got given witha alloy caseing believed to be from a4i or 4x4 sierra the guy gave me a thicker flywheel to go with it any ideas whitch box thisis reverse is to the right and down if this is any help cheers
If it's from a Sierra then it is a MT75. Was used as a 2wd and with a transfer box for 4wd. Will fit your Zetec engine, use Sierra starter motor. You will need a Zetec flywheel as the ignition needs crank sensor pickup.
Make sure your engine is pre-1992 to avoid having to have a CAT.

The rule on cats is complicated, but it is not illegal for a post 92 car to have no cat! It is only illegal for a manufacturer to build one without
the cat. The MOT test only requires that post 92 cars pass a 'cat' test, The car does not actually have to have a cat fitted to pass the
test, and some cars have such low emissions that they can easily pass without the cat.
