Been thinking about induction noise and the fact that the socks on my 919 won't exactly help to keep the noise down.

I know its a really simple design, using a £10 generic cone filter, but any reasons I shoulnd't just knock this up out of fibreglass with an aluminium mounting base?

Yep, that would work. Just remember to think about the elevated temperature under the bonnet (make sure your materials can handle it). I made something similar for my Zetec, see picture. I used the carbon shell from a bike silencer, so I had a perfect shape to start with. (I still have a shell lying around; pm me if you're interested).
