The last few drives Ive been on, the water temp hasnt gone above 60 deg C. In the summer and Autumn the car didnt have trouble keeping within 80-100 with the help of the fan.

Is it just the cooling system is too effective and If i blank off half the rad will this help.

Or could the stat be stuck open. I would have thought that if the water was stuck going round the block it would easy get up to 80. If the stat was stuck open then the hot water would just flow out to the rad.

Any ideas?

80 / 100 what car is it?? the locost??

100 is way to much n my opinion only bike engines can cope with that.

for summer use i would fit a 93degrees rad temp switch.

you can check if the stat is stuck open if the hose to the rad warms up just after start.. then you know its the stat.

I would replace the thermostat.
You could placed in hot-water with a thermometer and check if it works. But i wouldn't and just buy a new one

As quick check try to rev the engine around 3000 rpm standing still. it must come to the right temp due the lack of cooling wind

Where is the temp sender?

Sorry should have said, its a Pinto.

The temp only got close to 100 once, when the fan didnt kick in for some reason, but I have a manual overide switch on the dash and that brought it straight back down. The rad switch kicks in at 93C i think (polo switch) so keeps the temp down.

Will try warming it up at a standstill, I usually warm the engine up before I go out to about 60, but then it doesnt go over that when im out there.

The temp send is on the block on the inlet inlet side near the thermostat.
