We (I'm planning to build our locost with my friend) are thinking about using a rover v8, which is 175kg wet.. just wondering if anyone knows the
weights of any other engines, specifically the crossflow, pinto and motorbike engines, so I can get an idea if the rv8 is relatively heavy or light,
and how that might affect performance, handling, suspension, chassis loads..
I think being aluminium it's fairly light for it's age. but I want numbers
cheers,
hi mate..
check out this site.. has a load of engine weights
http://www.team.net/sol/tech/engine.html
ah nifty, thanks.
if the crossflow / pinto are on there I don't recognise their model names. hum
rv8 looks pretty light though, good good
Have a look at the bike engine weights somewhere. My 'bird weighs about 80kg and 170bhp. Engines like zx9/blade are even lighter!
But rv8 would make a better cruising car so it all depends on the style of driving you like.
hmm, hadn't considered a bike engine, rv8s come with gearbox all ready for rear wheel drive, easy (ish) to drop in I think.. not looked at using
a bike engine, how do you get the drive to the back?
and where do you get the engines, aren't they expensive?

another good website for engine/transmission weights:

Ford 2.3 Lima/Pinto in the ford section about half way down.... 418 pounds..
Thanks chaps. those bike engines are hella light, but I want my grunt and grumble
