Engine weights
blueshift - 8/6/03 at 08:26 PM

We (I'm planning to build our locost with my friend) are thinking about using a rover v8, which is 175kg wet.. just wondering if anyone knows the weights of any other engines, specifically the crossflow, pinto and motorbike engines, so I can get an idea if the rv8 is relatively heavy or light, and how that might affect performance, handling, suspension, chassis loads..

I think being aluminium it's fairly light for it's age. but I want numbers

cheers,

ah nifty, thanks.

if the crossflow / pinto are on there I don't recognise their model names. hum

rv8 looks pretty light though, good good

Have a look at the bike engine weights somewhere. My 'bird weighs about 80kg and 170bhp. Engines like zx9/blade are even lighter!

But rv8 would make a better cruising car so it all depends on the style of driving you like.

hmm, hadn't considered a bike engine, rv8s come with gearbox all ready for rear wheel drive, easy (ish) to drop in I think.. not looked at using a bike engine, how do you get the drive to the back?

and where do you get the engines, aren't they expensive?

You just use a flange to bolt the output of the gearbox to you propshaft.

Bike engines can come from all over the place (bike breakers, ebay, bike forums- yes they are more expensive than most car engines but your pounds:performance figures are a lot better!
