hi all to day i started pulling it apart for the big conversion i think ive done well today just got to buy me an engine crane now to get the bottom end out and gearbox. the bay looks big i think
the only thing in the way is the electronic power pump and the steering rack is high up so the engine might go in easy ill have to wait and see

So wait...

You're removing the engine & re-installing it at 90 degrees, using a different gearbox and a back axle to make a RWD car??

Or are you doing something else??

Cheers

The steering rack is in the way then...

oadamo - 25/3/07 at 06:19 PM

ive seen some cars in mags that the engine sits well back in the bulkhead would the rack then fit under the engine?

Why not use a MK2 Escort world class cross member?

Simon - 25/3/07 at 07:03 PM

The reason the rack is in the way is because it's a front wheel drive car.

As you're converting to rwd, the rack needs to be in front of axle line, and so will the steering parts of uprights. You may get around swapping uprights from left to right (iirc MG R did this with the ZT 260).

i have had a good look at it and the steering arms are fixed to the strut not to the hub. first time ive seen it like this.thats why the rack is so far up if i want to lower it i think i will have to change the struts or bodge something together

iam gonna use a sierra rear diff with irs rear setup ive already started making it at work. then fit it all to the back of the car then cut the tunnel to suit.ive ordered the rear suspension and ive designed the rear mounts at work on the cad. ive got the email add off a guy on hear so ive just got to get them emailed to him to get some lazer cutting done then after thats done cut the front wall to suit the gear box.jobs a good un lol

heh heh I remember my first RWD conversion, I thought about it like that too!!

Best to keep it that way, 2 years on i was ranting at mine after the 5th redesign!

Built mine 1998-1999, just as I left college, RWD Pug 205, vauxhall XE engine in the front and capri atlas axle 5 linnked in the back.

Its still around somewhere, sold it to AB motorsport in leamington a few years ago.

PS I'd strongly advise familiarising yourself with escort mk2 group 4 suspension setups and having a look at a few rwd converted rally cars (there are loads of rwd pug 205's, novas, corsas etc etc rallying every weekend)

There's no point re-inventing the wheel.
