Problem Solved!!!!!!!
My car now starts easily; the problem was a multitude of problems combined into one.
The starter motor (the reconditioned one) was faulty and was heating up as it was turned over and got slower and hotter as time went by, whilst the
old motor had a U/S solenoid. Solution was to combine the two to make one that worked.
The next problem was fuel in the filter but not in the float chambers, eventually tracked down to a kinked flexible fuel pipe. Solution re plumb to
avoid kinks!
The fuel pump needed attention as it had dried out and one of the rubber valves was not working properly.
Still the car would not fire up. So poured fuel into the float chambers on the carbs and hey presto fired up and continued to run.... so i put the car
away for the night.
Next morning there was petrol all over the garage floor, it turned out that one if the studs for fixing the fuel filter to a bracket was leaking and
the car had been pulling air instead of fuel. I bought a new and cheap plastic inline filter and problem solved, and for good measure I replaced all
the clips on the fuel lines.
I am now trying to start the car every day to ensure that the fuel keeps flowing and that I have a reliable starter.
the only tasks left before SVA are: - to set the head lights; set the tracking; put a radius on the dash and padding on the front suspension.
Should I apply for the SVA????

Go for it! What's the worst that can happen? I'd always assume the first SVA is going to be a fail anyway... I know I did a 36-hour building
fest (no sleep) before my first SVA test- still failed on stuff that I hadn't even thought of!!!
Good job on the engine front though!!!
