what gearbox would you run on a small block chevy????????

tks - 16/4/07 at 05:14 PM

if you are building a mid engined car (a real one) the obvious choice would be a transaxle...

else i gues some FWD box wich you are able to mate up with a plate..

you will need a plate anyway..

Tks

Fatgadget - 16/4/07 at 05:18 PM

Ummm is there a FWD box out there capable of handling the torque of a small block Chevy?

RazMan - 16/4/07 at 05:21 PM

Porsche or Renault turbo are popular choices as they are tough enough (although the Porsche one is stronger for higher power engines)

tks - 16/4/07 at 05:22 PM

that will depend on the FWD car you take it from...

Opel Astra OPC? 240CV..

Tks

anyway the trans axle is the better choice....

some audi transaxles have been used too, but porsche seems most popular.

Not sure about mating it to a Chevy but Caddy have a front wheel drive V8 in the Northstar range of engines, some transverse, some longtitudinal.

Might be worth an international ebay.

would be a massive help if you were to say how the engine shall be mounted ie north-south or east-west

because it will help yield the answer your seeking quicker.

personally id go north-south with a porsche box or if you wanted to be cheap a audi box.
google gtm sports car its a super car kitcar made by factory five in america it uses a small block and a porsche box if i rember right

dilley - 16/4/07 at 08:09 PM

yep north to south.

thomas4age - 17/4/07 at 04:56 PM

So that's the new plan then! I think a porsche box is what you'll need, something in the G50 range, probably a G50-50, IIRC. You're best bet is to look at the GT40 sites, as this is the same issue they have. Some of the Audi boxes are near identical, but much cheaper, as many of the old porsche boxes need re-building at mcuh expense, whilst a few cheap audi ones is much more sensible.

goodall - 17/4/07 at 06:21 PM

box in the 924 and maybe the 944 is exactly the same as that found in many 1980's audi 100 so there a good start

Schrodinger - 18/4/07 at 06:39 AM

Have a look at PPC this month (April) there is an article on transaxles.

Nothing that won't cost you well into 4 figures.

Gearbox?
I wouldn't bother, just fix the tractor wheels straight to the engine
