
I have a Toyota 22re engine out of an 84 Celica GTS, with a rebuilt W58 transmission. Due to some idiocy on my part, I managed to strip some threads
out of a cover (not the valve cover, nor the water pump, one on the other side). I wanted to replace the gasket. The bolt broke, and my extraction
efforts were for nought. It is going to cost me to get it out, weld in a new bit, and retap the hole. I might as well get the head reported and
polished at the same time. This will all cost $$$. I really wanted to use this, and when the time came, replace it with a new JDM 4A GE, which I can
get for a very good price.
1. Can I just use JB Weld, and hope it doesn't leak? This avoids having to remove the head and ancillaries.
2. Now, I'm thinking of calling the 22re a learning experience, avoiding putting good money after bad, and going ahead with the 4A.

Can you get a Helicoil in there?
What does the bolt hold in? You could helicoil it, or if it's not that important, just JB weld a stud in.
I would say that JB weld would do the job fine. I have used it to repair a boat propellor, repair a cracked cylinder block and also fill a hole in a manifold, which I then drilled and tapped, and they all worked fine. Bloody wonderful stuff. HTH Ray
The helicoil idea sounded good in theory; it just didn't work!! I am going to try the JB. If it leaks, I will retap another hole and try another bolt. Thank you very much everyone!
