Running Bike Carbs
Deckman001 - 18/4/07 at 09:30 PM

Hi all, I'm using Bike carbs on my x/flow and they go great, I was wondering if I should have a filter on them though, as at the moment there is nothing covering the inlets, and a filter might also stop me getting a face full of petrol when I boot it
Thanks for any replies

Jason

Your engine will die a relatively rapid death if not pretected from all the dust and crap in the air. One stone inside can blow it all up. For the sake of £40-50 it's not worth going without.
Oh, and it will contain the stand-off too!

I ran my R1 carbs for a while with no filters on my old engine. Had no bodywork on either and petrol in the eyes really stings!

Got a Pipercross filter on now. I get the occasional backfire throught the carbs (sounds like a gunshot) and the filter has been blown to bits so I'm quite pleased.

Cheers guys looks like I need to get it sorted then, should I try to get one from the donor bike or can you get them from else where ??

Jason

As said mate. It will distroy your engine in the end with no filter one.

Iv got an itg sausage on mine.

Get some short ram pipes to fit inside the filter. They will improve the flow of the carbs but will also contain standoff better than just the filter.

I uses some of 40's on my R1 carbs but cut them down to suit.

Definitely need a filter. Otherwise all the dust going into the engine will act like a nice grinding paste and knacker the engine tolerances very quickly.....

Whatever you do don't fit a wire mesh-type "strainer". They kill power, don't filter dust or grit and how many big pebbles are you planning on having flying towards the carbs???

Good points peeps, message understood and being acted upon

Cheers for all the help guys, If I do indeed get one of the above, are they a straight 'bolt-on' ie designed for each set of carbs or do you still need to work on them to get them to fit ??

Jason

bob - 1/5/07 at 09:15 PM

I got a blank fixing plate with mine, bit of measure twice and cut once needed

Deckman001 - 1/5/07 at 10:19 PM

Cheers Bob, I've so much to learn, but you never know someone else might have been thinking the same as me, but didn't want ask for fear of looking like a wally like I did
Cheers

I dont run any filters , how bad is that!!

You can also get individual socks to go on each carb.

bob - 2/5/07 at 04:47 PM

I was thinking of running withthe socks, mainly for price being a tight git.

Robocog Said he had a bit of trouble keeping them on though so i did another paper round and washed a few cars for the extra

se7ensport - 2/5/07 at 09:10 PM

socks also rob you of power as they don't allow the air to flow smoothly into the carb, you need a bit of space between the mouth and the filter.

Surrey Dave - 3/5/07 at 12:47 PM

I was going to use Primark socks , they're only £2 for 4 pairs!!!!

nige - 3/5/07 at 01:04 PM

has anyone ever tried to make a filter out of a pond pump sponge
or is it to course

Surrey Dave - 3/5/07 at 03:33 PM

I thought of that but it probably is too course although must be better than nothing!!

But would it be petrol resistant?
