LDV diesel gearbox, any good for V8
Mansfield - 29/4/07 at 04:40 PM

Is a gearbox from a LDV diesel mini bus any good to mate with an RV8?

Is it too weak? Are the ratios bad? Would the bellhousing be worth having?

Just wondered as I have been offered one.

Thanks

it may be, I think it depends on the gearbox number, try doing a search over at www.v-8.org.uk/forum

I believe the LDV gearboxes are the least sought after for V8 use, can't quite remember why, either because they've normally taken a beating from being in a van or cos of their normal stength

If you are after a V8 gearbox, there is also the R380 box that bolts straight on or the cosworth T5 can be made to fit with a modded belhousing IIRC. LT77's are getting difficult to get hold of in good condition now.

What age of an LDV is it? early ones used the LT77 I think but by the time they were calling them LDV they would be on the R380 box.
Then again which engine is it? The old M reg LDV 400 at work has a Peugeot engine & box & a P reg Convoy that we used to look after had the Peugeot TD engine on a Transit gearbox. There's also S & 02 reg ones that come in & the use the Transit engine too.
If it was the smaller 200/Pilot then if it's a Perkins 2l it'll be an R380 but if its the later 1.9 Peugeot engine then I'm not sure.
