During a run back from Norfolk yesterday, I was trundling along the A47 at the maximum 50 mph speed limit (yawn) with all the other Sunday drivers and noticed my oil pressure on the V6 Duratec was acting strangely.

Feathering the throttle at 50 mph is about 2000 rpm iirc and under gentle acceleration the oil pressure was reading about 2.5 bar but on the over run it was RISING to over 4 bar! I kept on repeating this to make sure I wasn't seeing things but it was the same every time.

Does anyone know why this should happen? Is it a warning that something sinister is about to happen

could it be the reaction of the engine causing it to chaff through the oil pressure wire and cause a short circuit and makeing the gauge rise to near max

Bigrich - I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying it is an electrical 'spike' which happens on deceleration?

i just thought that the wiring could have rubbed through and when its decelerating the bare wire may touch the engine causing it to earth out the gauge

Ahhh I see what you mean now. No, I am fairly certain that nothing is rubbing and the loom is well insulated. I am racking my brains to think of a reason the oil pressure appears to rise when gently decelerating - if I give it beans up & down the box it remains normal.

dou you have the oil vapours being re-circulated to you intake system ?

is there a electronic valve that could shut when not on the gas ?

Nope, my engine has gone right back to basics with just a crank sensor to trigger the sparks. I even removed the secondary butterflies to make the torque curve smoother. The crankcase breather is vented to a catch tank so absolutely nothing gets recirculated.

Will it only do it on the move ( driving ) or can you re-create at standstill ?
