whistling / squeeking!!

hi,

gunk in water problem solved: next one!!

i have a whistling / squeeking sound at tickover, seems to dissapear as you blip the throttle, then reappear as revs fall back. i also have a lot of popping and baging on the overrun also as you blip the throttle the revs sometimes fall back as normal, sometimes fall back much quicker and engine almost dies????

am i right in thinking this could all be symptoms of an air leak in the inlet somewhere?

Sounds like it. Run engine & slowly spray wd40 around induction joint areas. Engine speed should pick up when spray hits area of leak. Repair as appropriate.

Enjoy.

Stick a bit of suitable size tube in your ear then hold the other end around the inlet areas, any air leak will be really obvious - it makes a sort of roaring/sucking noise down the tube

my latest squeek was simply the fan belt. Sprayed with some WD40 and i was fine.

Felf like a fool - you get so paranoid about engine noises once you have had one fail!

I have no idea what engine you are using, but heres some more suggestions:

The squeaking/whistling might just well be a belt thats slipping (most likely the aux belt driving the alternator/water pump etc). If it was an air leak I would have thought you would notice it more at higher revs as more air would be getting sucked in. Does the squealing get worse if you turn the headlights on? Slipping belts tend to stop slipping at higher revs, and slip more at low revs with a higher load.

The popping and banging might well just indicate you are running far too rich at tickover, leading to unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which ignites when it gets a bit warmer (i managed to shoot 2' of flames out of my exhaust when it was running very rich) and its usually most evident on the overrun.

Just some more suggestions to confuse you even more
