Have just looked at a mk2 escort registration doc and the engine number has 7 digits. 2 letters followed by 5 numbers.
bummer im missing 2 digits.
ive got the logbook for the original car but no engine number on it is it a major problem for registering
On Mk2 Escorts the engine number usually forms part of the chassis number, so if you match what you've got with the chassis number it should give
you the missing digits.

great will have a look at that when i get home i know the car and engine (hopefully) are 1972 from mk1 escort but will have a look at that thanks
not majorly bothered if i have to have a Q plate but bonus if dont.
am i right in saying that it doesnt matter to much for the sva and dvla as long as i have some sort of receipt as proof and let them know before?
egnine number appears in the chassis number so if you have the original engine, the v5 can be used to derive the number - from memory it is the last 7
letter.dgits.
Get a copy of buton power catalogue - this lists ford engine numbers - the 2 letters indicaste year/month. This will satisfy SVA man.
Not sure how relevant having an engine number is for Q-plate or not - but it does help if you can show that a lot of the parts come from the donor.
SVA are only interesred in engine age for emissions.
DVLA only really want to be sure the engine is not nicked.

just looked at chassis & whats left of engine number, the letters on chassis number are MR which is FEB 1972 (according to burtons) and the only
letter on my engine is T, i have got a feeling its a 1977 engine as all 1977 ford engines had a T so looks like it was changed at some point.
how do i prove to the sva how old the engine is as only have one letter. its a 711M block
just looked into it and cant get an age related plate as to many new or other car parts, looks like a Q plate for me
It's about time It's about time the SVA inspectors realised when production of the cross flow ceased but that won't help with DVLA.
o just a thought is there any way to check with the dvla what the engine number was after it was changed if it was recorded with them
Might be worth cleaning the block where the engine number is with emery cloth, this sometimes makes it easier to see
thanks will try that may just put the original that is in the chassis number back on or just leave it as is and tell the sva/vro
