Hi Guys
Got the car fired up yesterday and it was running rough. Whipped the plugs out and they were black and soot covered so the engine is running very very
rich.
I need to tune the carbs, is Colortune still the best way ?
Last question, what size are the plugs on the old Pinto, will I need and adaptor to suit the plugs as colortune only comes with a 14mm plug?

Pinto is std 14mm plugs.
Colourtune is one of the best home methods of tuning. Allows you to get pretty close.

ive only had the car idleing for a few minutes and the plugs foul, i would hate to think what it would be running like after half an hour. i would be

reading the book i have been using to set up my carbs (ie not an expert myself) it has a whole section on how the plug colour can only help ou fine
tune your engine if the engine is set up well and you know it like the back of your hand.

IIRC Flak Monkey is wrong, the plugs for a pinto are something like 18mm, although the the hexagon on the outside is the same as a standard plug
spanner.

If I start my car and let it tick-over on the drive I find that the plugs can be very black. However, if I check them after a good run then
they're the right colour (for what that's worth).
You'll have some fun with the colortune - IIRC you've got twin Webbers, so you'll also have balancing to contend with! It does tell
you if you're in the right ball-park though.

indy kid has a point, the plug may be a 14mm but the socket is much larger. i've ordered the standard kit which comes with a 14mm plug, and i
notice that on some US web sites you can get larger and smaller plugs from colourtune.
David you are right i'm running twin 45 dellortos which will also need balancing at the same time. .
hope this will get it running a bit better

The pinto plugs have an m18x1.5mm thread, crossflows, zetecs, etc have 14x1.25mm thread which is what the standard colour tune is.
Have you ran the car on the road or just ticking over in the drive ? .I always found my crossflow sooted up the plugs if just started and allowed to
idle before i had it on the road, but was ok when driven normally. I once tried using a colour tune on my MGB but found i could get a better result
just by adjusting for best tickover by ear, all it allows is the idle mixture to be set up, so of no real gain for general driving in my opinion.

it's an 18mm thread, a 19mm socket size, but a 14mm plug.
i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that's the diameter of the insulation.
either way, if you go to look for a plug socket, they're marked 10, 12 and 14mm.
pintos definitely have 14mm spark plugs

If it is running that rich either the choke/cold start is stuck on or the float level is to high or the float chamber is flooding.
