Forgot to ask how much it will need for an empty box.
Something like 1.9 liters? Halfords do 1 liter bottles. I just got two on trade card and they wern't too bad a price.

We used to use ATF in ZF and rocket boxes with no issues.
I use ATF in mine for a slightly better change especially from cold.
When I drained my box, the oil was pink. The guy who checked the box for me said yes that was right but he couldn't remember what it was called. Would that have been ATF - I understand Automatic Transmission Fluid ?
So is it ok to use AFT as I think I have some, is it better than Halford standard 75w90
From the Retro Car Type9 guide:
BGH recommend Ford Semi-synthetic oil ESD M2C174-A Sepcification (Ford part A83SX 2c 175-AA), or Comma Semi synthetic gear oil.
They do not recommend engine oil, ATF or EP80.
When I spoke to Brian from BGH at Stoneleigh he recommended the Comma oil. DO NOT use incorrect oil as it causes problems

Just found this thread and I`m now confused. I am suffering problems getting 1st & 2nd gears when gearbox is cold or hot. It takes a bit of
persuasion to select. Spoke to a couple of gearbox reconditioning companies today who both told me to use Devron 2 ATF fluid in the box as standard
gearbox oil is no good. I have had 75w/90 in it as suggested in the Sierra Haynes manual. They say to drain this out and replace with Devron yet
others on here say otherwise?
Anybody want to throw any expert advice into the pot?

I'm also using ATF in my 30 quid type 9 box. It's coupled to an EFI pinto and has done around 3K miles without problems. The gearchange is
superb using ATF, although i have not ever used the "proper" oil to begin with.
So if you do use ATF, it won't destroy the box within the first few miles.....
Do not use an EP (extreme presuure sometimes called "hypoid"
gear oil oil for complete fill --- use a gear oil without EP
additive.
A good multigrade semi-synthetic or full synthetic GL4 gear oil is ideal. -- Castrol Syntrax Universal 75w-90
EP oils are only for RWD drive cars with hypoid final drives and have shed loads of EP additive --- not a good thing in a synchromes gearbox.
MTX type oils for transnverse gearboxes have EP additive but not as much as Hypoid EP oils.
ATF is really a thin gear oil with similar ammounts of EP additive to MTX oils and anti foaming agents and friction additive (shulphur).
