What causes a noisey diff in reverse.

As above, a friend of mine has a granada cosworth with he thinks an LSD. When reversing the diff makes quite a loud noise.

Any ideas, he was contemplating a new diff but are they fixable?

The profile of the gear teeth are only designed to drive in one direction and such are noisier when run backwards.

To be slightly pedantic (I'm bored ) it's not actually the diff which is noisy it is the final drive (CWP).

Any car makes a noise in reverse. Are u sure its the diff not the gearbox??

Reverse is a straight cut gear so theyr always noisey. Especially when reversing at speed.

I dont think it will be the diff making the noise.

More than likely its the gearbox. Reverse is known to be weak on those A4LD auto gearboxes.

Does it take a long time to engage reverse after the selector has been shifted to R?
