hi ive got a wire coming out of my type 9 gearbox but whats it for. and on the other side there a sort of fitting with a bar about 10mm sticking out
is there something missing.

Are the wires connected with a round black rubber plug? If so, reversing light switch.
Small bar sticking out at a downward angle? If so, thats your speedo drive.
Thats assuming you're talking about the back of the box, under the gearlever.

The outer cable on the speedo cable has a conical end on it. This is held into the circular housing with an internal circlip. Oh and by the way, get
the circlip from a gearbox place motor factors etc. I tried an off the shelf one and it kept popping out.
The bar that sticks out should have a small square hole in the end of it. The inner cable of the speedo cable fits in there.
