Type 9 gearbox oil
Trev Borg - 29/7/07 at 09:32 AM

The sierra manual says 1.9l of SAE 80EP to ford spec ESC-M2C 175-A (Duckhams Hypoid 75W-90S)

Is this just 75w-90 ?

whats everyone else use ?

Think you will find gearchange very poor using oil to that spec. IIRC type 9 should use semi? or fully synthetic oil BGH recommend Comma oil but I can't remember the spec, suspect they know a thing or 2 about type 9s. Looks very much like ATF

Mine got topped up with ep80 because that's what I had. I always used it in my RWD Escorts and never had a problem with them.

All the type 9's I've tried have been fairly notchy when cold on EP80 type oils, particularly going up or down into 2nd gear. Makes me wonder if there's not a case for going for a lighter oil, or even ATF as already mentioned.

i wouldnt recommend using ATF on a manual. i know for sure it screws it up. i remember how used car dealers used to put ATF fluid on some manual boxes to give the impression that the gearbox was in tip-top condition. it also gave smoother gearchanges, but a couple of miles down the road and BOOM.

SAE 80w90 hydroil is what i'm using for the g'box and diff and its pretty much the best u can use

We used ATF in ZF boxes on rally Escorts with no bother.

The Rover V8 5 speed boxes had ATF as standard, If you put EP oil in them they could break the little fibre gear in the oil pump in the box. "So it was said"

The Burton's catalogue states 75/90w semi-synthetic oil for a type 9.

Import not to use an GL5 EP oil use a a GL4 oil or non EP gear oil

GL4 oil Comma SX75W-90 High Performance Semi-Synthetic Gear Oil

ATF or TQF or TQA is fine in a manual box Mercedes and Rover/Land-Rover have both specified it.

20w/50 and 10w/40 Engine oil has also been specified for many manual rwd boxes.
