I'm new to the kit car game and want to install a 2.0 pinto to the Locost seven i bought a couple of weeks ago.
Can you look over my shopping list and add/advise as necessary:
Engine (starter motor, alternator etc)
Twin 45's and inlet manifold
Big Valve Head
CAM
4 branch exhaust
Type 9 Gearbox
Prop shaft
Quaife LSD (English)
The main area of concern is the Propshaft.
As above i'll be running a Type 9 and English rear axle. Can anyone give me advice....can i buy an off the self item, or do i need to modify a
second hand one?

the prop needs to be shortened. some ususally pop-up on ebay and here on the "for sale" section some kit car manufacturers (Mk engineering,
Mac 1, Mnr, to say some) may have one you can buy but you must be sure of the length you need as every kit needs a slightly longer/shorter prop. what
you normally do though is take the original prop to an engineering shop to have it balanced and welded.
i have to ask you if you are aware of the financial outlay you shopping list needs?
you're looking at over £400 for the twin 45s, around £200 for the cam (depending on which), another £200 or so for a big valve head, another £300
for your 4 branch exhaust and god knows what for a quaife LSD (£600 IIRC)...
that and the engine sums you to close to £2000
unless you are getting a reconditioned engine, you do need to at least replace the main gaskets, oil seals, etc...

my feeling would be to spend more on the engine rather than go all out on the top end diff.
I know a diff is a nice touch but why go for the best. It's not like you are going to break it with a pinto. lol
From what i have seen thus far i think i would go for the Vx redtop if i were doing it over. Just a thought.
Also have you taken into acount the ignition system? You cannot use the standard dizzy with webers.
I'm sure you have opened a bag of worms here!

Ok cheers - i'll sort the prop shaft once everything's installed and i can take measurements.
Regarding cost...
I've already bought most of the components;
Engine for £85
Carbs for £250
Exhaust was £250
Gearbox £80
Quaife LSD was £400 new (i think it'll be worth it)
I've got a local pinto expert working on the head and building the engine.
Expecting a £1000 bill from him

I'm hoping i've not missed anything major off my list - pretty much maxed my budget already!
Point taken on all the costs mounting up.
However the car only cost me £1750, so once completed I should have alot of performance for less than £4k.
The car's based on MK1-2 escort/cortina so i wanted to keep the engine in line with the vintage ford theme. Hence the Pinto.
I might enter a few hillclimbs locally next year. This set up should be competitive (even if i'm not!)

Yep - the car was compete and running so it's all there.
Apart from needing some softer rear springs and the dash board sprucing up, it's a great little car.
I'm sure i'll be back asking more questions once the install gets under way.
AL20vT I have everything you need as I didn't complete build with my pinto.
