Dipstick, that is... hang on, that doesn't sound any better...

Any road up, could someone with a 1600 X-flow measure the distance between the 'full' mark on their dipstick, to the alloy 'lump' that limits how far it goes into the hole in the block?

The reason for asking is that ages ago I had a 1600 Pinto block in my garage, which had a dipstick identical in appearance to the X-flow one. Unfortunately, although the boat anchor was disposed of, the dipstick remained - and got mixed up with the X-flow one. Now I don't know which is which!

The length of 'dip' is different, so this simple measurement should help me to identify the right one...

dave you shortend the sump.

so you should fill with the recomended amount then re-mark the dipstick.

Yes, I have shortened the sump, so I expect to achieve the correct oil level with a slightly reduced volume (about 250ml less, I think). Trouble is, I took some volume away, then added some extra elsewhere!

I don't want to put the original 'book' volume in, as then my level will be too high, risking my oil seals.

I was going to put the correct dipstick in, then carefully top it up and find out how much I need.

isnt it possible to measure how much you took away, and calculate the cc volume, and then add on the volume of the bits you added?

Too many curves and odd shapes involved to be reasonably accurate.

No - someone with a 1600 X-flow and a tape-measure will be much easier!

I was wondering on a similar subject to this, now my sump is shortened, and i concluded that i should fill it to the line and leave it with less oil, for much the same reasons as dave. Might have less oil but i think thats better than it being too full/deep.

Sorry though mines a 1600 pinto so i cant help on the dipper stick.

I was happy to have slightly less oil, as I'll only be doing around 3000 miles per year max, and I'll probably change the oil every Winter.

There's still plenty enough to do the job, by a long way.

P.S. I had a look at them both last night - they are 99% identical - the only difference is the position of the high/low markings on the tab.
So, the distance I need is either from the 'stop lump' to the high mark, or from the tip to the high mark - either will do.

Right then. From the bottom:

-starts flat, and there is a dash 20mm up.
-then a narrow bit centered 26mm further up.
-20mm above that, it tapers back to a round bar.

At the top it is coiled round twice to make the finger pull bit. Yellow on mine.

The plastic stopper bit is maybe 10mm, with a lip at the top.

Didn't measure overall cos they're the same.
