OH MY GOD!!! Had a oil starvation problem at a recent trackday and thought i'd just knackered my big end and main shells but after replacing
them, they were knackered, i took the car for a run and the KNOCKING
was still there. So i've just removed the cam cover to discover that
the camshafts(piper 285) are heavily scored in the caps
.
Does anyone know of any sort of remedy as i spent 3 months and a lot of money on this engine and as far as i can see my very expensive cams and the
head i ported and hand ground all the valves in is FUBAR
Any help please as i've had to have my shoe laces and belt taken off me so i can't hang myself

Paul
See if you can get them reground into a different phase.
The knocking could be various things - did you inspect the crank journals? if the bearings were knackered then there is a good chance that the mains
and big ends are less than perfect.
If the cams are scored too then you really need a full strip down and recondition.
Whilst it is apart you should have a think about why it suffered form oil starvation and cure that too....
Cheers

as above re-check the bottom end and the oil pump/supply and as for the cam i have seen them repaired by a process the engineers called metal spraying
and then regrinding the profile. (the last time i saw it used was a good 9 years ago so it may not be able to be done now)
ps i hope i am right
As above but if you return the cams to piper they may be able to regrind to a slightly smaller base circle.
Thanks for the replies, I know why i had a starvation problem, the oil filler cap came loose/nearly off while i was lapping anglesey circuit so the
level dropped which then lead to starvation while going round the corners. The problem is i'm not sure how far i went before i noticed
I measured the crank journels and i'm not sure what they should be but they were all the same (i think they were 58.85mm) with a micrometer, as
advised the engines comming out tomorrow night, but just concerned if the cams have worn the caps that the head will be useless
Paul
bin the engine and get a fresh bottom end, its cheaper than a set of bearings
Surely the cam will only wear the cam bearing journals.
You can soon get a new set of cam bearings put in there!
