I think I'm going through the mental-pause...
Currently my car has a Type 9 gearbox that's from a 1600cc Sierra. I want to buy another box to restore/modify, with the aim of swapping them
over some time in the future.
Are all Type 9's the same, whether from 1600's or 2000's, or do I have to make sure that I get another 1600 box? I know that the 2.3
box is different.
I'd be really pee'd off if I fix up a box and find that it doesn't fit...
cheers,
David
P.S. Anyone in East Anglia want to sell me a known-to-be-working Type 9 box at a nice cheap price? Exact model subject to the answers I get here, of
course! Don't need the bellhousing...
There all the same apart from the V6 ones that have a better first gear ratio and longer input shaft .

There are also detail changes over the years.. There was a good guide in ClassicFord a few months ago.
There are 3 kinds of 2wd T9 box.
One fitted to all 4cyl petrol engines.
One fitted to v6 petrol engines.
One fitted to stinking oil burning stacks of rattling nuts and bolts.
So, anything fitted to a 4-cylinder Sierra will do.
Splendid!
Thanks to all.
Don't get one from a diesel , ratios as already pointed out are crap
Watch out for long and short input shafts.
not all sierras have type 9's later ones have mt75's
Rusty - I thought the long input shafts went with the V6 engines?
Trev - that's one factor I do know! It's only the type 9 I will be looking for.
Not sure David but I think the diesel one that Danzoman had was a long shaft box
2.3 weasel had the long input too, plus slightly different selector forks (stronger)
Just to confuse the issue there was a 4WD Type 9 on early XR4x4's as well, though the differences are rather obvious!
